The PR firm in query was the US-based Burson-Marsteller, which was told to pitch the idea to news agencies that Google’s Social Circle feature was violating privacy.

Facebook and Google have been at loggerheads this week, with the news that Facebook hired a PR firm to look in to Google and its apparent violation of users’ privacy causing uproar.

Private parts

Facebook has released a statement with regards to the reasoning behind hiring the PR firm, telling Cnet that it was not trying to muster up a ‘smear campaign’ against Google but was trying to gauge the reaction of third parties when they found about Social Circles and the potential privacy issues of the service.

“Instead, they wanted third parties to confirm that people did not approve of the collection and use of information from their accounts on Facebook and other services for inclusion in Google Social Circles â as Facebook did not approve of use or collection for this purpose.

“No ‘smear’ campaign was authorised or intended,” explained a Facebook spokesperson.

“The issues are serious and they ought to have introduced them in a serious and transparent way.”

“We engaged Burson-Marsteller to focus attention on this issue, using publicly obtainable information that could be independently verified by any media organisation or analyst.

The argument between Facebook and Google all stems from Google stopping Facebook from data-mining its Google Contacts information to put on its site. This, in turn, made Facebook come up with a workaround, which then prompted Google to write a narky statement when users used the workaround, reproaching Facebook’s lack of openness.

The new revelation that Facebook has been hiring a PR firm to look in to Google’s tactics has definitely left the social network in a poor light, but there is a positive feeling of ‘the pot calling the kettle black’ from both companies on the issue of privacy.

Review of Samsung RC510

The 15-inch Samsung RC510-S03UK laptop computer shows off exactly what Intel’s Core i3 performance beast of a chip can. It is also moderately priced â you can currently find for around £580.

It is , , with shiny fingerprint-magnet finish as well as a profile which makes it look much thinner than it actually is â a trick the MacBook Air has perfected and the RC510 pulls off well. The general look is definitely a step up from Samsung’s earlier laptop computer range, which only sidestepped the generic tag thanks to a couple of well-placed curves. (more…)

Nikon has stopped the sale of its Coolpix S4100 compact camera due to a shortage of parts following the 11 March earthquake in Japan, the company has announced.

According to a statement posted to Nikon’s Japan website, the Nikon Coolpix S4100 ‘will be canceled’.

The company cited lingering ‘problems with parts procurement’ and stable production, which has prohibited Nikon from making sufficient supply of the camera to meet demand from photographers and dealers.

It is believed that the Nikon S4100 is the first camera to be officially discontinued due to the effects of the earthquake in Japan.

The Nikon Coolpix S4100 was announced on 9 February 2011.

Our colleagues at PhotoRadar have left messages with representatives from Nikon asking if the Coolpix S4100 will be re-launched in future.

We will update this story as more details become available.

Paperless Mobile Ticketing

Although the idea of mobile ticketing is not exactly new to the world, Chiltern’s new app will let you buy tickets on your handset, then use it as your ticket on the train or at station barriers in the United Kingdom.
